RECRUITING

Recruiting mailbag: Cy-Hawk hoops visitors, Iowa special teams recruiting, Tucker DeVries

Matthew Bain
The Des Moines Register

It's been a minute since our last recruiting mailbag. I hope you all enjoyed some time off with loved ones for Thanksgiving.

As always, feel free to send me questions over Twitter or to mbain@dmreg.com. I know I do the weekly call-out for questions on Twitter on Mondays, but I'm happy to take questions any other day of the week, too.

Before we get to this week's answers, first a quick update on visitors for Thursday's Cy-Hawk basketball game in Ames:

  • Ames 2022 point guard Tamin Lipsey, a major Iowa State target, told me he'll be there.
  • It's still up in the air whether four-star Iowa State signee Xavier Foster will be on hand, his father, DaJuan Foster, told me. It depends when they finish practice at Oskaloosa.
  • Nothing other than those two, at the moment. If things change, I'll post any updates on my Twitter.

OK. Time to answer some questions.

Is Iowa looking for a punter with 2 seniors graduating and (Ryan) Gersonde coming off an injury? — @iowafanwilliams

Yes, the Hawkeyes are looking to add a punter in the 2020 class.

Probably the main name to keep an eye on right now is Gavin Meyers, a five-star punter out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Kohl's ranks him as the No. 17 punter in the country. He holds preferred walk-on offers from Iowa and North Dakota State, plus a scholarship offer from Division II Minnesota-Duluth.

Meyers visited Iowa in late September.

The Iowa staff have any interest in Tucker (DeVries)? — @insiderhawk

Yes, the Hawkeyes have shown interest in Waukee 2021 wing Tucker DeVries.

I actually just watched him and his teammate, Iowa 2021 wing target Payton Sandfort, in Waukee's 68-61 win over Johnston on Tuesday. DeVries could not miss in the first half, and he wound up with 32 points to lead all scorers. He made a strong case to land in one of the top couple spots in the Register's next 2021 recruiting rankings.

Creighton and Drake, where his dad, Darian DeVries, is the head coach, are the two main schools recruiting Tucker, he said; South Dakota State and Air Force have also offered.

Iowa first reached out in June and has maintained its interest. DeVries said Iowa State and Texas are also in the picture.

DeVries, who boasts a 6-foot-6 frame with room to grow and fill out, is an excellent shooter and rebounder. Ball-handling was a weakness last year, but he has significantly improved over the offseason and is now running the point for Waukee.

If he continues to play at a high level throughout the season and into his AAU season, it's hard to imagine high-majors such as Iowa not taking serious looks. He projects as a low-risk, high-IQ, college-ready player.

Remember: Kansas also reached out to DeVries in June.

Waukee's Tucker DeVries shoots a layup during the Johnston at Waukee boys' basketball game on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019, in Waukee.

Are there anymore JUCO Basketball Prospects ISU is looking at? — @LoganHayes_30

I would be surprised if Iowa State's coaching staff wasn't keeping a watchful eye on all the transfer markets, including junior college. In today's game, with attrition coming just about every year, coaches must at least be aware of potential transfer options, should they need them in the spring or summer.

With that said, I reached out to Indian Hills coach Hank Plona the other day, and he said, to his knowledge, the Cyclones aren't currently monitoring any of his 2020 guys.

What’s the look on Cole Glasgow recruiting? — @VinceMauro11

It's no secret that Ames' Lipsey headlines this state's 2022 class of boys' basketball talent. Early indications, though, suggest he may not be the only high-major-bound sophomore in Iowa.

Keep an eye on Dallas Center-Grimes guard Cole Glasgow.

He's a 6-1, versatile, three-level scorer who can play at both guard spots but gets most of his minutes right now at the 2. As a freshman last year, he averaged 11.9 points per game on 47.8% shooting and 35.9% from long range.

Through Dallas Center-Grimes' 3-0 start this year, Glasgow is averaging 22 points on 62.5% shooting and 66.7% from beyond the arc, along with 2.3 assists per game.

His AAU coach with All Iowa Attack, Keith "Lefty" Moore, told me Belmont has shown an early interest in Glasgow. Obviously, as the season progresses and he gets into AAU ball this spring and summer, more schools will get a chance to see him.

Some other intriguing 2022 prospects in Iowa enjoying good starts to their seasons: Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln guard Josh Dix (South Dakota State offer); Waterloo East guard/wing Trevion Lebeaux; Marshalltown guard Armonniey Thomas; North Polk guard Jevin Sullivan; and Okoboji guard/wing Lucas Lorenzen.
