Logan Luft, a Charles City teenager who was involved in a fatal ATV accident last summer, is being remembered during this year's Iowa high school state wrestling tournament.

Referees wear red and green wrist bands that say "Luft Tuff" as Michael Blockhus of New Hampton wrestles Andy Brokaw of Solon during their first round 2A 138lb match on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, in Des Moines.

Luft, 15, suffered a severe brain injury as a result of a Fourth of July accident. He would have been in ninth grade this year.

News of his death shook the wrestling community across the state and even the country, as an outpouring of support was provided on social media.

Michael Blockhus, a senior from New Hampton and a Northern Iowa recruit, had a close relationship with Luft, the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reported.

"You have a lot of things that will drive you," Blockhus said. "The tragedy of Logan Luft impacted me a lot. That is just a big thing to keep me going, helping him living on through me and my wrestling career and helping his family."

Blockhus (54-0) pinned Solon's Any Brokaw in a Class 2A 138-pound matchup during the state tournament's first round Thursday.

In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Luft's mother, Wendy Luft, said two passions defined her son: Fishing and wrestling.

"Anywhere, from his sports to wrestling to school," said. "He was a very dedicated person."

Logan Luft (top) of Charles City suffered a severe brain injury following an ATV accident on Tuesday, July 4, 2017. He was declared clinically brain dead the following day.

Nearly all of Logan Luft's organs were donated to those in need. While the Lufts were at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary's Hospital, a flag flew outside the Mayo Clinic-St. Mary's Hospital on Logan Luft's behalf because of his decision to donate.

"It took something so tragic, so hard, and it made it something to be proud of," Wendy Luft told the Register back in July. "A piece of him is going to live on in many people."
