Iowa coordinators, Doyle get pay bump to $625K after Kirk Ferentz's extension

Kirk Ferentz’s recent signing of a contract to remain Iowa’s football coach through the 2025 season has also provided an immediate financial boost for most of his assistants.

Offensive coordinator Greg Davis, defensive coordinator Phil Parker and strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle had their pay bumped to $625,000 (up from $595,000) for this season, retroactive to July 1, data obtained through an open-records request showed.

Ferentz’s new contract -- which will pay him $49.5 million over 10 seasons, before bonuses -- that he signed Sept. 5 contained a stipulation that he would have a “one-time salary increase pool of $250,000” to distribute among his nine full-time assistants, Doyle and other staff.

These raises are on top of pay hikes the staff received under the terms of Ferentz’s previous contract after the Hawkeyes went 12-2 in 2015 and reached the Rose Bowl.

Offensive line coach Brian Ferentz and defensive line coach Reese Morgan received the biggest raises ($34,000 each) from the new pool of money. And at $625,000 annually, Doyle as strength and conditioning coach will be making more from Iowa this season than 32 FBS public-school head coaches made from their respective universities last season, according to USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa’s athletic department is self-sustaining, so the increases do not come from public funding.
