Iowa signee Joe Wieskamp breaks Jeff Horner's Class 4A state scoring record

He did it.

In the 19th game of his best of four incredible high school basketball seasons, Iowa signee Joe Wieskamp broke Mason City legend Jeff Horner's Class 4A scoring record Tuesday night against Burlington.

Wieskamp needed 31 points to top Horner's mark of 2,194 points set in 2002. He had that number by halftime, scoring his 31st point of the night and 2,195th of his career from the free-throw line in the second quarter. He finished with 44 in a 74-56 win.

The future Hawkeye entered Tuesday averaging a state-best 34.8 points per game and 13.9 rebounds per game (third in Iowa) for Muscatine (13-6). He has now scored 98 points in his past two games after unloading for a career-high 54 last Friday against Bettendorf — with Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery in attendance. 

Wieskamp rose from 11th to first on the 4A all-time scoring list this year. He passed Linn-Mar's Jordan Bohannon (1,591), Des Moines North's Hurl Beechum (1,593), Davenport North's Ricky Davis (1,619), Ames' Fred Hoiberg (1,759), Ames' Harrison Barnes (1,787), Ankeny's Ray Fontana (1,899), Iowa City High's Matt Gatens (1,928), Mason City's Dean Oliver (1,924), Sioux City North's Daniel Tillo (2,016) and Horner, who's currently an assistant coach at University of North Dakota.

With 2,208 career points, Wieskamp now ranks 14th all-time in Iowa history, regardless of class. He is 78 points from cracking the top 10.
