Hawkeyes land 2020 Crestwood standout Sharon Goodman

IOWA CITY, Ia. — With recruiting work still left in both its 2019 and 2020 classes, the Iowa women’s basketball team took a step forward in bolstering the future.

The Hawkeyes picked up a late-night commitment from 2020 center Sharon Goodman, who announced her decision via Twitter Saturday. The Crestwood junior is Iowa’s second 2020 commit.

“So excited to announce that I have verbally committed to attend the University of Iowa to continue my basketball and academic career,” Goodman wrote in her announcement. “Thanking God for blessing me with the opportunity and for my family, teammates, and coaches who supported me along the way.”

Goodman was one of the centerpieces on Crestwood’s undefeated 2018 team. The 6-foot-2 standout averaged 19.9 points and seven rebounds for the Class 3A state champs, shooting 75 percent from the field and 76 percent from the line.

Goodman was at her best on the season’s biggest stage. In-state and area college coaches flock to the state tournament for recruiting purposes, and Goodman put on a show, averaging 24 points over three games as Crestwood rolled to the title.

Goodman also ran with the Iowa Lady Stormers this summer, bolstering her recruiting stock as the months went by.

Goodman joins Montezuma’s Shateah Wetering in the 2020 class. Iowa also has a pair of 2019 prospects committed: Mason City’s Megan Meyer and Cincinnati native (Mount Notre Dame) Gabbie Marshall.

The Hawkeyes’ current unit carries lofty expectations this season, but graduation will hit that veteran group hard over the next two years. Megan Gustafson, Hannah Stewart and Tania Davis are all seniors. Kathleen Doyle, Makenzie Meyer and Amanda Ollinger will graduate after the 2019-20 season.

Which means replenishing the roster with quality prospects like Goodman becomes all the more important.
