Peterson: After Chaos Saturday, it's time to reshuffle my Big 12 preseason predictions

With Iowa State joining four other Big 12 Conference football teams in a well-deserved Saturday away from everyone beating up on each other except Baylor, let’s reshuffle. Last week’s chaos threw a wrench into all predictions.

Not only that, but Baylor is a surprise, as is Kansas State in its first year under new coach Chris Klieman. Texas is a bit of an under-achieving headscratcher, too, given its 10-point loss against TCU, and hanging 50 points in just a two-point victory against Kansas.

So, with about half or less of the season remaining ...

SATURDAY’S BIG 12 PREDICTIONS

KANSAS STATE (5-2, 2-2) at KANSAS (1-4, 3-5)

Time, TV: 2:30 p.m., on FS1

Vegas line: Kansas State by 6 points

Prediction: Kansas is playing well, especially since Brent Dearmon took over an offense that totaled 1,096 yards the past two games. That’s more in two games than the 936 yards for which the Jayhawks combined against in consecutive games against West Virginia, TCU and Oklahoma. The question is how does that offense get onto the field against an opponent that’s hanging its helmet on time of possession? Kansas State is fifth nationally in this statistic, averaging just more than 34 minutes. Against Oklahoma last Saturday, the Wildcats won the minutes department by an eye-popping 38-22.

Score: Kansas State 27, Kansas 24

TCU (2-2, 4-3) at OKLAHOMA STATE (2-3, 5-3)

Time, TV: 2:30 p.m., on ESPN

Vegas line: Oklahoma State by 3 points

Prediction: TCU’s defense statistically is the best in the Big 12, a fact that’s buoyed by the Horned Frogs’ offense owning the ball nearly 34 minutes a game. TCU’s defense, however, has flaws. Iowa State rang up 436 yards in its 49-24 victory, 102 of that coming from Brock Purdy’s 12 rushes. Oklahoma State has a 1-2 punch of quarterback Spencer Sanders and running back Chuba Hubbard. Sometimes teams can slow down one of them, but rarely both in the same game.

Score: Oklahoma State 27, TCU 24
