Iowa State is heading to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl, but bowl organizers won't allow fans

No. 12 Iowa State will face off against the Oregon Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl Jan. 2, but unlike the waves of cardinal and gold seen at past bowl trips, the game will commence without fans.

The 8-3 Cyclones lost their shot at a Big 12 Championship title Saturday after losing 27-21 to the Oklahoma Sooners, but there is more Cyclone football to be played. The Cyclones will battle in Glendale, Arizona, against the 4-2 Ducks at 3 p.m. Jan. 2. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

This will be Iowa State's fourth bowl bid since Coach Matt Campbell joined the team in 2016 –– competing in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida, the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, and the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, over the last three seasons.

Due to COVID-19, the State Farm Stadium where the Fiesta Bowl is hosted will only open its doors to the immediate family of participating teams.

"While we are disappointed that the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will not have fans in the stadium to enjoy Bowl Season this year, we respect the decisions made by the local authorities," said Mike Nealy, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl Organization, according to the Fiesta Bowl website.
