Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague says he will issue an order Tuesday requiring Iowa City residents to wear masks.

The announcement is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The order would be defying Gov. Kim Reynolds, who, along with the Iowa Attorney General's Office, said that local officials do not have the authority to do anything that conflicts with the statewide emergency declarations and public health guidance on COVID-19.

Teague previously has flirted with defying the governor over coronavirus measures when he said he would issue a shelter-in-place order if she did not. But after the governor said he lacked the authority to do so, he did not follow through.

As of Tuesday morning, there was a total of 1,639 confirmed coronavirus cases in Johnson County and 39,419 total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Iowa, according to the state. Johnson County has seen an increase of eight cases since Monday.
