From the archives: Iowa boys' state basketball tournament through the years

1956: Emmetsburg Catholic supporters mix up their letters to spell out "Irish," the school's nickname.

1958: Players from Class A state champions Davenport pose with their trophy and a copy of The Des Moines Register.

1959: Clarion's team members (from left) Gary Doty, Dan Stober, Tom Purcell, Richard Meyer and John Phillips celebrate making it to Des Moines for the state boys' basketball tournament.

1959: Ron Kleppe (left) and Dennis Knoche (right) celebrate their state victory with Leon Kroemer (middle), who suffered a broken wrist during the two-day trip.

From 1970: Davenport Central guard Dave Thomason is carried off the floor by teammate Ron Denger after Thomason scored 30 points in a 75-60 win over Storm Lake in the Class 2A championship game. It was the ninth state title in 20 years for the Blue Devils, who finished the season 22-3, with all three of their losses to teams from Illinois.

From 1970: Jim Goodrich of United of Boone, entered the state boys' basketball tournament with a state-high scoring average of 32.9 points per game. The Comets opened the tournament in a Class 1A game against Tri-Center.
